I received a call a few days ago from a buyer who expressed interest in a property near Dry Run. It is a 22 acre farm. Here’s the twist; it is Amish owned and has no electricity or showers, modern conveniences that most of us take for granted. After providing this buyer with some particulars on the property, he decided he wanted to see it. So, we met there this morning to take a look.
The owner met us in the driveway and proceeded to give us a tour of his rather large home. And, he did a great job of explaining the how’s and why’s of building this home. He explained how he is able to pump water from the well by the use of compressed air and how they are able to keep food refrigerated without the benefit of electricity. The cabinets were solid oak, built by his father-in-law. Most of the doors were the same.
He makes his living mostly by selling eggs. He has 1,500 chickens in several buildings. He also has an English Bulldog that he breeds and sells the puppies. I know that part will bother some people, but the dogs appeared to be well fed and cared for and had plenty of space and there were only two.
I was struck by how simple this family lives, no cell phones, no cable, no electric, and seemingly, very few cares. Now, I’m not likely to go home and turn off my power or throw away my cell or quit showering, but it is just refreshing to pause and consider how others live their lives.
